2009 in a nutshell

Christian's job has gone through many changes over the past few years, but finally, Countrywide became Bank of America, leaving us both very relieved. He also got a title promotion (LAME!!) and is now a Sr. Vice President (but it does sounds so good). He also became an adjunct professor for the University of Phoenix working as an online instructor teaching finance classes. USC did not bring him a lot of happiness this year, but maybe next season. He is still (always and forever) in the EQ presidency. He is a good dad--Jill told me today she would be okay if I went to jail, because then dad could quit his job and stay home with them. (I am not planning on going to jail). He has been so helpful to me in my new church calling and educational adventures. He almost never complains...
I started my masters program and I love it. It does make my life a bit hectic at times, but I am enjoying what I am learning (ESL) and educational theories. Its really interesting to me. I also started teaching Spanish very part-time for Primavera Online High School. I love it because I am able to work from home mostly during the afternoon when Leah is sleeping. I got re certified to teach in AZ, which was SO hard. I had to take two monster tests, one on Spanish and one on educational theories. I was so relieved to pass both of them. In October, I was called to be RS president of my ward. It was so humbling, surprising, and down-right scary to be asked to take on this type of responsibility. It has really stretched me in ways I did not want to be stretched. After 3 months I can say that it is getting easier and I am learning to love serving in this capacity. There are parts of this calling I will never love, but I do love helping, that is a blessing in and of it self.

It seems that for the moment we have turned a corner in our sibling rivalry journey. Sydney and Jill are finally realizing that their fighting drives mommy crazy and they don't wont a crazy mommy. Who does? So, they are trying to be nicer to each other, and it has made my life so much better. Syd and Jill switched schools to a smaller less crazy environment. It appears the risky move has paid off, as they are both a lot happier. Jill almost never complains about having to go to school. Leah has been going to a babysitter one morning a week, and she calls that her school. She loves it, she is so different from my other children. She is still reserved, but very accepting of new places and people. It makes going to the gym (and nursery) A LOT easier.
Leah makes us laugh. She thinks she is at least Sydney's age and can do whatever Syd can do. She has very little fear when it comes to being active and jumping and climbing. (very different from her sisters). She has grown up so much this year, I can't believe she is 2 1/2. Yesterday, out in public, we saw a very, very overweight lady and as she walked by Leah said "That's big, mommy, that's big." I could have died. She loves to sing and I love to hear her roaming around the house singing her unique versions of her favorite songs. Jingle Bells is her song of choice these days. Dont let the blonde hair fool you, she is still very much a fiery red head.

Jill, 5, decided over the summer that she likes posing for pictures, this is one of her many posed photos. She has come a long way this year. She and I are really starting to understand each other better and because of that we are all a lot happier. She is so sweet and very sensitive. I seem to embarrass her already. I can not speak loud to her in public, in case someone hears what I am saying. All day kindergarten has been hard for her, but she is coming a long. She has many fears and little anxieties that we are working on, but I have been so happy with her progress. She prays a lot, quietly and to herself, about little things like that she wont be late to school or that wont be worried that she will be late for school, or that mom will hurry and not make her late for school.

Sydney was baptized in August. She told me she wants to be a good girl, but she may have something wrong with her that makes her want to be mean to her little sisters. She loves learning how to do anything that interests her. Just this week she learned how to blow bubbles with chewing gum and she learned how to sew a simple stuffed animal pillow. She gets very obsessed with learning something new and wont stop until she is completely frustrated or finished the job. She has started doing housework (dishes, and vacuuming) and I love having a helper. Now, I just need to teach her how to clean the showers and my life will be so good! She is kind to her friends and classmates, the quality which I like most about her.
It has been a challenging year, full of new experiences for all of us. We are busy, but we are happy. We feel very blessed in many ways. Heavenly Father has certainly found some creative ways to answer our prayers.

A Wicked Halloween

Jill was Glinda-the good witch, all she knows is that her song is "Popular" from the musical.
Leah was Dorothy, although all she really cared about was her sparkly red shoes.
Sydney was Elfaba and loved having a green face.

I love those piggy tails!

STEW

Stew and family came to visit (Stacey and Drew) and we were lucky enough to go stay with them in Scottsdale at their hotel. We got to go swimming a lot and eat lunch poolside. Very cool! The kids had fun playing together and we all fell in love with baby Trevor--Leah wanted to take him home with us.
Thanks for coming to visit guys!

Jill liked making Trevor happy.

Happy little guy

Where did all the toys go?

So fun holding sleeping Trevor

Sydney and Ethan

Sydney was baptized on August 8, 2009 at noon in Chandler, Arizona. We were so excited to have some special visitors come to town for the big event. We had Grandma Liz and Grandpa Jerry, Grandma Dee Dee and Aunt Shannon, and Taylor and Sara Syphus and family (Ethan, Christian, Michael, and Luke). Sydney was very excited about being baptized, when she got out of the font she had a big smile on her face. I asked her how she felt and she said she was really happy. This was Christian's first opportunity to baptize someone. After the baptism and lunch, we went swimming. The kids had a great time together. The adults were really tired from staying up too late and watching movies.
We've had a great weekend and wish we could see our family more often!

Tessa comes for a visit

The girls loved having Tessa (Allison and Ted's baby girl of 51/2 mos.) come for a small visit. Jill kept saying that Tessa's hair smelled so good. Leah wanted to be the little mommy to her. She wanted to give her the pacifier, take her out of her car seat, give her big toys to play with, stuff the bottle in her mouth, etc. Sydney bragged to her friend that her Aunt Allison is a really good cook and makes the best chocolate cake (she's never said that about me). The girls were sad to see them go. We wish them the best in NC!

Sydney's GR8 Bday!!!

Anna and Sydney at Glitterbox, all beautified!
Jill, Sydney, and Anna at Polar Ice

Yes, those two front teeth are finally both in...
Leah gets her wish, too (as usual).

Sydney had a delightful birthday. First, her BFF Anna got to come over after school on Friday for a sleepover. I took the two girls to get their hair and nails done. They had a ball! Then we went and looked at the adorable doggies at the pet store (of course) and drank smoothies. Back at home, the girls along with the neighbors and Jill and her friend Daisy (and I can't forget Leah, too) all had a fashion show with music from Christian's ipod (he's always such a sport). The girls went to bed way too late and woke up way too early. The next morning Sydney opened her presents and played Wii -- Dance, Dance Revolution - Disney style and Hannah Montana -- World Tour. Leah probably had the most fun of anyone and now knows the lyrics to "Best of Both Worlds". Christian took the girls ice skating (Jill, Sydney, and Anna) and to McDonalds for lunch. We had cake and ice cream after dinner and we had to blow out the candles twice --once for Sydney and once, again, for Leah, who is sure its her birthday, too. Now, I am officially done with birthday parties until next year!
BTW...her most exciting present was her new cellphone (because Anna has one). Yes, I swore my kids would never have one. But, then I thought, this isn't the 80's, the times they are a changing. Her biggest surprise was getting a call from Uncle Brandt in Iraq, she thought that was pretty cool. She also loved to talking to her Grandparents and Aunt Shannon, too.

Back to school

July 27, 2009 is the day Jill started Kindergarten. She and Sydney were VERY ready to go back to school. Sydney was completely ready to go by 6:45am. Jill slept in, of course, they only sleep in on the days I have to be up early. My last conversation with Jill before I left her at her desk coloring a picture of a lion went like this: MOM ""Bye, Jill. Have a great day" JILL "I will" MOM "Should I go now?" JILL "Yeah" MOM "OK, I'll see you after school" JILL " OK" (probably thinking to herself, "don't let the door hit you on the way out"). She seemed very nonplussed about the whole event--the event I have had anxiety over for the past year.
Before school starts

Wicked

For Sydney's eighth birthday, we took her to see the musical Wicked. She has been listening to the music for the past two years since Christian and I went to see it in LA . She enjoyed the story and she feels that now she can watch all of The Wizard of Oz , last time she watched it she got scared and had to finish half way through. She wants to be in musicals when she grows up, that must be the "Syphus" in her. Christian has been having the kids listen to the songs from Phantom of the Opera, his personal favorite, and now Sydney and Jill cant wait to see it.

Leah turns 2!!!

Leah turns 2!! She loved having a birthday party and opening all her presents.
She got a Snow White dress and loves being a princess.
She opened her presents, with a lot of help from her sisters and friends.

Mommy's little princess.

Pin the Tail on the Donkey was a big hit with Leah.

She wanted to play it again, and again, and again....

We got a pinata that you don't hit but instead pull strings until it opens up--it sounded fun, until one of the girls pulled all of the strings at once :(

Tour de Utah

Our trip to Utah was very nice. We loved seeing our family, we missed them! We first drove to St. George to stay with Christian's parents. We drove over the Hoover dam (it only took an hour and a half) which was really an amazing site. Then we drove to Heber City which is surrounded by beautiful hills/mountains. We stayed with Taylor and Sarah and their four boys. On the 4th of July, we got to see Ethan be baptized, which was a real treat for Sydney. We had a feast at Taylor's house, did a little shopping at the outlets in Park City (with the girls), and then enjoyed a neighborhood fireworks display. What a great place to live! The kids stayed up until almost midnight every night and, of course, never slept in. My girls loved seeing their cousins who all bonded as they made their own recipe of something they liked to call "Juice Punch" or "Jello Soda" and was made out of the left over soda from the party.

After Heber City, we went to stay with Kiffany and Josue in Saratoga Springs, another beautiful town but this time by the lake. Another amazing place to live! The girls had fun playing wii and video games. We went to temple square one day and met Gary and his two boys there. We got to drink Diet Coke at the Navoo Cafe which is right across from the temple and church-affiliated!! What a thrill! On another day, we went to Discovery Park in Pleasant Grove and hung out with all the cousins. I had fun talking to my sisters-in-law, I have the best ones in the world! Also, we got to see Uncle Brandt and Uncle Logan and their significant others.

From Saratoga Springs we went to Stansbury Park (another place right on a lake, really cool) for an overnighter at Gary and Emily's house. Jill and Josh got to stay up really late "reading" books to each other while Leah got to boss around Noah (1 year old).

Monticello was the last destination on our trip. Christian and I actually got some sleep-lots! Christian and my mom floated down the San Juan river with Sydney and Jill and two neighbor girls--a four hour journey! The river trip received mixed-reviews due to lightning storms and water spiders, but at least it will be an "unforgettable" experience for all who went. Jill got to ride on a horse (Leah got scared of the horse's teeth) and Sydney only wanted to ride a pony.
My favorite event in Monticello was watching "no. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" series that my mom recorded from HBO, I really loved the books and the TV shows did not disappoint. We want to thank everyone who helped us have a great summer trip!

Syd and Jill with Poochie--their favorite dog.
Leah enjoyed putting all the dog food in to the water in the water bowl-hours of fun!

Jill loved riding the horses.

Sydney, Noah, Josh, Leah, and Jill enjoy lollipops in Stanbury Park.

A teaching moment-we taught them all about outhouses.
Syd enjoys the pool in Emily's backyard.

Jill has discovered posing for pictures.

Michael, Jill, Bethany, Syd, Abbey, and Ethan in PG.

Christian holds Noah and Luke, and tries not to get his white shirt dirty!

Leah loves getting lost...
Temple Square

Josh & Jill at Temple Square.
Noah learning to drive.
Syd, Uncle Brandt, Leah, Owen, Matthew and Jill.
Noah liked taking care of the dolly.
He's going to be a good daddy.

At the children's museum, Sydney dressed up like Mary...
an angel.
Josue, Owen, Kiffany, Matthew, Syd, Jill, Candacy, Leah, and Christian.
Michael, Jill, and Christian - a love triangle.

Sydney and Ethan in Heber City.
Christian surprised Jill (and everyone else) with a private picnic on the front lawn. He got the blanket, bread, bratwurst, cheese, and an apple all by himself. He is quite the romancer--His parents better watch out!
I think Jill was afraid to sit on the blanket because of the possibility of bugs being down there.

Waking up in Heber City--its cold!
